Childproofing Tips for Home: The Hidden Dangers

Preschoolers in their quest to explore their most familiar surroundings are at most risk at home. Surprisingly, now matter how much you childproof your home little ones are always finding new hazards. Apart from the regular childproofing needs, there are hidden dangers that often get overlooked.  

Rail Guards

Rail guards are necessary to prevent preschoolers from crawling through spaces on banisters and stairs, and are just as important as they are for windows. 

Lead-Based Paints 

It is important to ensure that paint used in the home are lead-free. also check other items in the home for lead and eliminate them from the home environment. 

Drawers

Parents will try to place needles and other dangers away in drawers away from little hands, but quite often forget that preschoolers are growing. The problem here is that eventually they will be able to reach that drawer. As such, you need to remember to reevaluate and change methods of childproofing as the preschooler grows. 

Furniture

It is best to avoid furniture buying or using furniture with sharp edges, especially if the edges are at the level of preschoolers. 

Potpourri

These nice smelling and often very pretty concoction can be dangerous as preschoolers may want to run a taste test. If you have potpourri around put them up high. 

Parked Vehicles

Non-traffic car accidents are a cause of thousands of deaths and injuries to preschoolers each year. These accidents result from parked vehicles accidentally rolling back of an incline, and power windows strangling preschoolers. 

Sandboxes

This favored play area is a breeding ground for bacterial diseases. To help prevent preschoolers getting sick from playing in the sandbox (at home or even at preschool) keep sand boxes clean and ensure that all cuts and bruises are cleaned and covered.
 
 
To keep your preschooler safe, do an evaluation every few months to ensure that your earlier methods of childproofing are still workable.
