How to Teach Your Preschooler about Traffic Safety

Learning to cross the street is one of the fundamental lessons all preschoolers must be taught. In preparation for kindergarten, especially if your preschooler will be taking a school bus or walking to school, they will need to learn about traffic, how to cross the street safely, the role of the crossing guard, and how to properly use a cross walk. Here are six great tips for teaching your preschooler about traffic safety.

Using the Cross Walk Button

Go to a cross street near your home where traffic is low. Explain to your preschooler about the importance of crossing at a cross street rather than the middle of the street. Show your preschooler where the light-change button is and how to push it so the light will change to green and allow for crossing the street. If the street where you're practicing does not have a cross walk button, tell your preschooler to watch for a green light in their direction.

Identify Marked Cross Walks

If the cross walk is marked with white lines, explain to your preschooler that they must cross between the white lines. When the light changes, explain to your preschooler to look both ways before crossing. Tell your preschooler only to cross once the vehicles have stopped for the light.

The Role of the Crossing Guard

In preparation for walking to school or a bus stop, explain to your preschooler the purpose of the crossing guard. Tell your preschooler what his/her job is and how it is their job to help them cross the street safely. Explain what the crossing guard will do to get them across the street.

Crossing Without a Traffic Light

Explain to your preschooler how to cross at an intersection when there is no traffic light or the traffic light is not functioning. Allow your preschooler to cross practice what you've taught them, but stay at their side and cross with them.

Watch Your Preschooler Cross the Street Alone

Once your preschooler follows all your instructions for crossing the street, go to a low-traffic street and allow them to do it alone while you wait on the other side.

Check on Your Preschooler Regularly

Regularly repeat the instructions to your preschooler and check on them to make sure they are continuing to cross safely. If possible, have your preschooler always walk with a friend, especially when crossing the street.
